Modern Decoration Interview-Designers' Learning Approach
1. Reading
Yuan Ye written by Ji Cheng from Ming Dynasty is my recommended book. It reviews particularly on relations between human and architecture, human and nature, examines from traditional cultural and philosophical angle how space speaks to human being. Though it¡¯s a book of landscape architecture, it covers pretty much all techniques of space processing. In terms of skills, materials and emotional dimension, it invests some humanity and cultural elements into the space. Reading this book might appear to be boring at first, but you will come to realize how modern the content could be. I believe this is a must-read for today¡¯s architects and interior designers.
2. Travelling
It was a impressive trip to Huangyao, a ancient village in Guangxi Province. For the first time I witnessed the modernity revealed by the ancient buildings, clean and neat, natural and spontaneous. From bond approach to tiny windowing, they all come across as modern and current. The subtlety in using natural light amazed me as I walked inside. Rambrandt light created a warm and sacred environment. That trip was well worthwhile.
3. Masters
Le Corbusier, Luis Barragan etc.
Corbusier, with no doubt, influenced all contemporary designers. Luis Barragan interpreted perfectly the relations between architecture and nature, and sky, and human being. His design is simple and authentic, embracing bold colours. He made me realized that interior architecture requires great exterior effort. An inspiring space shall be the best evidence of the perfect combination of human, space, light and nature.
4. Clients
An entrepreneur and an artist, I don't know between them what to learn and what to talk. An entrepreneur learns to be an artist? Very likely all employees will run away. Or an artist learns to be tolerant, to be charm or to be emotionally disguised? Very likely nothing will ever come out of his/her creativity.
5. Traditional Education
So much I would like to talk about our intolerable education. Only by looking at our graduates, it's not hard to tell what today's education has achieved. Every year, these youngsters of promise are sent into the society by their classysily built colleges and universities, with no major, no skills, and no emotion. The thresholds and fees of some schools are set so high that only rich kids can afford to go. Others might have to sell out everything the family has for it. Then these kids start to enjoy the brilliant university life, with random relationships, endless online chat and exclusive care for entertainment industry. Dreaming of being their own bosses after one year work experience, they ask for sponsorship from their grey-haired parents who believe in them unconditionally. With barely any knowledge and experiences, career end up failing before they even realize. This is the outcome of our education.
Chinese education, why don't you teach these kids about persistence, about personality charm, about bottom line of basic morality and about love? Why the more educated they are, the colder they become, the worse their EQ gets, and the lower their virtue is? Why?
When it comes to our design education, things only get worse. It is supposed to groom divergent thinking on the basis of solid knowledge and skills, rather than nonstop plagiarizing and imitating. Earlier years of education at least brought up some limner. What about now? Even what teachers care nowadays is no longer to teach knowledge and skills. A generation and a generation of computer kids sent to this society, does computer help with culture and art? We cannot Wechat out some talents in a blink. This society is not a factory and the outcome of our education shouldn’t be standard products.
Never mind. Today's universities have turned into entertainment radio stations. Professors have become stars who are hungry for fame and money more than anything. Just forget about it!
6. Other approaches of learning
Learn from nature and search for inspiration in nature. We no longer intend to step outside our houses. Instead, all updated information and material are from internet. They are in face more poison than nutrient. Idea will come to us after more reading, more walk in nature, more observing. All the brilliant designers on magazines learn from nature.
