The architect Peter Cook had ever said, “Italy is perhaps a tragedy, because she loves her past too much, which led to a grave result --- Though Milan has design scenes, it is also a tragedy, since it has seen little change.

Is China also a tragedy? Since it seems that she does not like her past. This perception, however, influences Lee Hsuheng’s team --- they have been seeking to render a fully modern design style that can also remind the Chinese people of their old traditions and cultures.

Spice Spirit Restaurant is situated in Dragon Dream Building, Hongkou District, Shanghai. The brand hopes to copy the softness and curved figure of woman’s body into the restaurant. While keeping this in mind, Lee Hsuheng also adds Chinese Tai Chi concept into the design, i.e. while reserving the feminine and soft perception, using stacked polygonal-brick wall to present the masculine and firm sense. In this way, he takes the relations of combining masculine and feminine strength in Tai Chi to find the order of piling up and the concept of complementation and spatial filling.

The Restaurant has three dining areas which are decorated in two elements. One of the elements is the white French curves. The mirrors between boards stress the idea of feminine and softness in Tai Chi, and the shape of curves comes from the LOGO of Spice Spirit Restaurant. Lee Hsuheng interprets the brand image of curved beauty of woman’s figure with modern techniques: lots of curves used on walls and ceilings highlight the human aesthetics; the laminations created by the vertical curves also produce the curves at the horizontal surface, which makes the unbelievable simplicity and naturalness of woman-figure oriented structure.

The other element is the purple stacked polygonal-brick wall, the dense connection of bricks and the large volume of wall embody the concept of masculine and firmness of Tai Chi. Vertically the wall encloses a central dining volume, and at the same time, divides the Restaurant into three dining areas. This practice finishes the combination of feminine and masculine elements.

The design team wishes to take Chinese Tai Chi as the basic concept and presents it with contemporary design elements and methods, making the customers feel the true spirit of “temptation” while enjoying the delicious “spicy food”
