The Tanjong Beach Club on Sentosa Island in Singapore is a refreshing presentation of clean, modern architecture by way of the 1960’s.  The simplicity and restraint in the details succeeds in a first impression that stuns; the light wooden slats all facing in one direction, the skylights that allow sunshine to soak the room, and the ocean blue cushions that line the banquets in the all-day dining room… it is hard to believe you are actually indoors.

Designed by Takenouchi Webb (a partnership between British architect Marc Webb and Japanese interior designer Naoko Takenouchi), their overall concept for Tanjong was inspired by the tropical surroundings of the development.   The designers took a “holistic” approach to the project, sourcing all of their own products.  With their hand in everything from the lighting to interior design to the architecture, the finished product is just as Webb and Takenouchi hoped: a destination venue where clients are compelled to let their days turn into nights without ever having to leave the property. “The tropical modern design mixes elements of classic yacht clubs, mid-century modernism and parts of Singapore’s colonial history.  By using simple materials such as timber, stone, rough white plaster render and the lush tropical landscaping of the site, simple modern lines are combined with the warmth of natural materials.

As you enter, the design is seamless.  A world of raw materials put together to evoke polished luxury –and it just works.  An architectural beauty nestled effortlessly into the nature that surrounds it.  Perhaps the best example of the striking design is the juxtaposition of the cement white wall that stands at the entrance of the property in the soft sand of the beach.  These two opposite elements somehow tell the entire story of Tanjong’s design.

As is indicated in the name, Tanjong is a modern day beach club with lots of vintage flavor.  It is finished with a present day edge and the comfort of a luxury hotel or a country club.  The vibe of exclusivity poolside and along the beach is exciting, sexy, and fun.

At 5 meters wide and 20 meters long, the infinity pool and its surrounding outdoor bar are the epicenter of the glamour that Tanjong Beach Club exudes. Covered cabanas, plush day beds, lounges, and deck chairs line the poolside all the way to the beach.  With lounge chairs this comfortable, it is no wonder that guests stay for hours upon hours. As the sun sets, nighttime brings a heavier crowd to the second outdoor bar.  Located just beyond the pierced concrete of the entrance to the beach club, the perforations of the white wall allow the glow of evening lights to illuminate the bar area.  The soft beams kiss the patrons as they party well into the night.
