DMY Berlin 09: Berlin designers Osko+Deichmann will present a cantilevered chair formed from tubular steel folded into sharp bends at DMY International Design Festival Berlin next month.

“The objects seem spontaneous as if folded by hand,” the designers say of the collection, which is called Straw.

The project will be on show as part of an exhibition called Happy Birthday Bauhaus at Contributed, Studio for the Arts in Berlin 4-26 June.

It was also exhibited at Prophets & Penitents – Confessions of a Chair in Milan last month.

Happy Birthday Bauhaus

osko+deichmann present their furniture series „Straw“ based on kinked tubular steel at Contributed, Studio for the Arts, Berlin.

In honour of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus osko+deichmann reconsider the visual language as manifested in the Cantilever Chair and go on to challenge prevailing design patterns.

The bent tubular steel has been heralded as the symbol of modernity in furniture design ever since the radical innovations designed by Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer in the 1920s. The industrial technique completely innovated household design, and matured to an undisputed iconic element of design vocabulary. With “Straw” osko+deichmann pay homage to the classic Cantilever Chair and two other tubular steel pieces by visually and physically challenging tradition and implementing a controversial detail into the canon of the design: The kinked tube.

Relying for support on the properties of the material from which it is made, non-reinforced tubular steel, the “Straw” series exposes a visual fragility using the kinked tubes.

The kink, being the most immediate way to deform a tube, revolutionises the aesthetic appearance of a tubular steel furniture. The disciplined character of the Bauhaus classic idiom is contradicted.
