Step out onto the rooftop terrace of Park Life at the Beijing Yintai Center, and find yourself face-to-face with a wooden structure that looks anachronistically out of place against a backdrop of soaring skyscrapers.
This is XIU, a dining and entertainment concept managed by Hyatt, and set to become the next go-to watering hole for Beijing’s well-heeled. Written in its Chinese character, the word XIU means “refined” and “elegant”.
That refined elegance is borne out in the meticulously crafted Chinese wooden pavilion that harkens to the Song Dynasty (incidentally known as the ‘creative era’ in ancient Chinese history). XIU is divided internally into five zones – a lounge with live band, wine bar, restaurant, club and cigar lounge.
Japanese interior design powerhouse SuperPotato (the same folks behind many of Hyatt’s other Asian properties) came up with a walk-through concept, reminiscent of Old Beijing’s famous cobbled alleyways called “hutongs”, so you can swing from one zone to the next to get a feel of the different vibes. For that added Chinese quaintness, the architects have landscaped a bamboo garden as well.
It’s an oasis of a different kind in Beijing’s increasingly urban landscape – one that makes for an ideal romantic date, a funky night out, or even a quiet nook to contemplate the crowds.
