Touch for Those Touched by the Economy
Since May, professional massage therapisoil massaget Linda Clifford of Ingleside has been offering free massages to locals who have lost their jobs through the program "Touch for Those Touched by the Economy." Clifford works at the YMCA as an independent contractor Tuesdays through Sundays. "I came up with the idea because I've been in that position, not with (this) economy, but (I was) laid off about five years ago," Clifford said. "I've had some regular clients who have lost their jobs." Clifford schedules the free massages during the slow times between paying clients. Each unemployed resident gets one free massage a month. "It totally helped me," said Vickie Voukidis of Lake Barrington. Voukidis lost her job as a managing attorney of a Chicago law firm in December 2008. "I'm a single mom, and it makes it stressful to say the least," Voukidis said. "I didn't know how stressed out I was until she started (the massage) - I was all knotted up in a ball. ... She's just a fabulous, fabulous massage therapist, and I've been to many. Gayle Sabitt of Hawthorn Woods was laid off of her sales administration job in Wauconda in March. She said the massage she received in June was a rare luxury. "(I applied) because a massage is a luxury item, and while not working we forgo luxuries," Sabitt said. "I thought this was so generous of Linda." Clifford said less than 10 percent of the massages she gives at the YMCA are part of this free program, but the program is growing. She said she only got one or two calls for the program in May, but now gets three or four calls a week. Clifford said she can tell the clients who are having a stressful work situation as she gives the massage. "You can feel their tension on the table; you can feel it literally in their body," she said. feiw0723 Both Voukidis and Sabitt are grateful to Clifford. "She has this extra time on Sundays, and she could be doing something completely selfish for herself," Voukidis said. "But I think it's a testament to her that she takes a couple hours she has free to help people who have been touched by this down economy. It's a testament to her giving spirit."
