G Hotel Penang: Logo

The logo and art installation with billiard balls and stick to correspond with the main event that was happening at that time: A billiard tournament!. This is a dynamic space, during Christmas the "G" logo is adorned with Santa's hat on top.

G Hotel Penang: The Lobby
Lobby with a "Living Room" concept centred around a main hall sharing spaces with adjacent Bar. It's surprising to see arrangement like this in Penang where majority is Chinese, because when you arrive from the main entrance, you can see through the whole interior so straightforward. In feng shui terms, it is considered bad luck. Well the contemporary has proven them wrong, as the hotel is an overnight success. I love the spatial arrangement though.

It's really hard to believe that this ultra-chic interior does not belong to Paris, because things this glam and stylish usually found in the Europe. It might suprise alot, but this is a scene from Malaysia's newest and hottest spot, the G Hotel in Penang. The name is derived from the locality of the area, and the name of the famous street where it sits on, Gurney Drive.

When the hotel was inaugurated in 2007, It took Malaysian hospitality world by storm and the hotel has been enjoying a high occupancy rate ever since, it is even full during weekdays!. The hotel also adjoins the next door Gurney Plaza, that might explains why it's so popular among Penangites. When I checked-in, even the older conservative praised the bold architectural statement and dark interior!.

Designer chairs, gorgeous murals, amazing light features, all complements the hotel's stylish interior. I personally think this is one of the most stylish hotels in Asia, even when compared to notable boutique hotels such as JIA Hong Kong by Phillipe Starck or the New Majestic in Singapore; or the W Seoul-Wakerhill. The best thing is G Hotel is so affordable, the rates is only a fraction of what you have to pay in other major Asian cities, so imagine if it compares to the mind-boggling prices in the US or Europe.

Penang: Twilight over Gurney Drive

Glancing towards the northen part of Penang Island in Malaysia from the top floor of the ultra-chic G Hotel Penang. The roundabout on the left is the apex of Penang's most famous boulevard, Gurney Drive, with waterfront promenade to enjoy the beautiful seaview.

Penang is one of Malaysia's most famous islands and popular tourist destination with pristine beaches, exotic culture and history; and delicious local food. If you google and Wiki on Penang, you will also find out that some of the most famous (and/or notorious) Malaysian are in fact Penangites, which include Malaysia's current Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi; Ex-deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim; legendary shoe designer for the Hollywood Jimmy Choo; legendary actor/singer P. Ramlee; and famous Feng Shui consultant Lilian Too. Source: Wikipedia
